· The 8.6% (3.9
millions) of the 46.5 millions of tourism trips made by Spanish people
during the year 2001 had as destination a foreign country, a 0.5 %
more than in the same period of the previous year. · These
trips generated 41 millions of overnight stayings, that means an increase
of 6.9% in relation to 2000. · The average overnight stayings
increased to 10.3 days, slightly more than in 2000 that was of 9.7
days. · The months with more trips abroad coincided with
the traditional vacation periods: Summer and Easter, reaching the
maximum in August (20.5%). Although we can see that since 1999, the
tourists travelling abroad is no longer limited to the summer vacation
seasons, due to the greatest year-to-year rate of increase experimented
in June, July and September, as against August. · Taking
all the Spanish tourists travelling abroad, 32.3% lived in Catalonia,
16.7% lived in Madrid and 9.9% came from the Valencia Community.
· The Autonomous Communities in which, proportionally, their
inhabitants made more trips abroad are Catalonia, where 16.4% of the
trips made by its inhabitants were outside our borders, Balearics
(13.2%), Galicia (11.6%), Basque Country (10.8%) and Valencia Community
(9.5%). · The main destination abroad for the Spanish people
was Europe, gathering 77.3% of the trips abroad. The most visited
countries were Spain’s neighbouring countries, that is to say,
France was the destination for 21.2% of the trips abroad, Portugal
with 12.6% and Andorra with 12.9%. The foremost destinations outside
Europe were Morocco, with 4.4% of the Spanish Tourists travelling
abroad, and USA (3.1%). · The main reason to travel abroad
was leisure, recreation or holidays, the same as the trips inside
Spain (66.4% of the trips were made due to this reason). The following
main reason was to visit the family and friends (14.7%), followed
by work or business (10.9%). |
